If trauma has knocked you off course, you may feel like your life has shrunk and stopped you feeling like yourself.
You may find that you want to move forward, but:
-
You keep reliving awful things that happened in the form of flashbacks or nightmares.
-
You have times when you feel overwhelmed by distressing thoughts and memories.
-
You often feel anxious and panicky.
-
You have a shorter fuse and find yourself being angrier or more irritable than before.
-
Your confidence feels like it's been squashed.
-
Triggers derail you when you least expect them to, leaving you scared, upset or anxious.
-
You’ve stopped doing the things you enjoy and don’t recognise who you’ve become.
-
You feel more distant from your friends and loved ones.
-
You feel frightened or worried in situations that didn't used to bother you.
If this sounds like you, you’re not alone.
I’ve been helping people overcome distressing or traumatic experiences for over 20 years, and I see these symptoms and behaviours all the time. They are all common experiences after a highly distressing event. They are also changeable with the right help.
If you’ve struggled to recover from your trauma, you may feel like it’s your fault .
This isn’t true.
Distressing events often leave a lasting imprint on our whole nervous system. This means that we experience and respond to the world differently. After a traumatic event, we are ofen more sensitive to signs of threat or danger, and we often relive the things that happened to us.
This is our brain's way of trying to keep us safe and avoid future harm, but it can cause a lot of distress for us and can stop us from living our lives in the way we’d like to.
Trauma changes the way the brain and body respond to the world. Healing starts with understanding your patterns and developing skills to regulate your nervous system and rebuild your life.
It is possible to reconnect with yourself and the people you care about AND rebuild a life that feels like yours again.
